How early does the Bethelview Road and Castleberry Road intersection open now? As of this month, the answer is 6 a.m. A year ago, most of the activity on this corner came from the Cumming Fairgrounds, and that meant evenings and weekends. The new buildings going up on the triangle at the intersection are organized around the opposite end of the day: breakfast, coffee, and pickup lanes built so nobody has to leave the car.
This fall the two halves of the corner overlap for the first time. The Cumming Country Fair & Festival is running through October 18 while the first Southard Exchange tenants are opening across the road. Seen together, they show a corner splitting into a morning shift and an evening shift. The morning shift is the new one.
A Triangle Drawn for Cars
Southard Exchange is an Abernathy Development project at 5509 Bethelview Road. It covers about 16.94 acres in a triangle where Castleberry Road meets Bethelview, and the plan calls for eight outparcel buildings. That parcel layout explains most of what you see from the road. There is no shared storefront strip and no anchor grocer. Instead, each tenant gets its own freestanding building and its own traffic pattern.
According to North Atlanta Star, the development was approved with room for five drive-thru businesses, and construction started going vertical this spring after years of planning and site work. The same report puts the corner between existing Kroger-anchored and Publix-anchored shopping centers. The groceries were already here. The new buildings add a layer of fast stops in between.
The announced lineup is Chick-fil-A, 7 Brew Coffee, Fifth Third Bank, Maepole and Shake Shack. Shake Shack will be the brand's first Forsyth County restaurant. North Atlanta Star describes 7 Brew as a brand that has been "expanding rapidly through small, drive-thru-focused coffee shops." That makes a coffee window, a breakfast counter and a bank branch three of the first uses on the site. All three fit the commute.
The Morning Arrived First
Chick-fil-A Bethelview & Castleberry, at 5580 Wren St., was announced to start serving on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 6 a.m. Its posted hours are Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with dine-in, drive-thru, mobile pick-up, third-party delivery and the company's Mobile Thru lane. The opening announcement says it is the second Georgia restaurant for local Owner-Operator Kristie Bergstrom.
The next day, a few doors up the same road, Jeff's Bagel Run opened at 5610 Bethelview Road. It is the shop's second metro Atlanta location, and it is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appen Media reports that every bagel is made in the shop, boiled and baked throughout the day, with 16 rotating flavors and a menu of signature and seasonal cream cheese spreads, coffee and specialty drinks.
Co-founder Jeff Perera described the goal in terms of habit:
"We're excited to officially open our doors, meet more of our neighbors and become a regular part of their routine."
Two openings in two days, both serving before 7 a.m. and one of them closing at 2 p.m. That is the first real evidence of what this corner is turning into. Its newest businesses are timing themselves to the school run and the drive toward Ga. 400, not to dinner.
Maepole Is Using Cumming to Test a New Format
The tenant with the most riding on this corner is the one that hasn't opened. Maepole was founded in Athens in 2018 by Chef Peter Dale. It is building its Cumming restaurant at Bethelview and Castleberry, and the company page lists the opening as "late 2026." It will carry the same menu as the Athens and Summerhill locations, and it will be Maepole's first restaurant with a drive-thru pickup lane.
Maepole calls the building a purpose-built prototype with a full dining room, an outdoor patio and the pickup lane. It describes the format as "a model for future company and franchise locations as Maepole expands throughout Georgia and, ultimately, the Southeast." The company's own pitch for the lane names "workday lunches, post-workout meals and weeknight family dinners" as the use cases.
North Atlanta Star reported construction visibly underway on September 3, with no exact opening day announced. The menu is built around bowls. You start with a base such as brown rice, quinoa, sweet potato or salad greens, then add vegetables, a sauce and a protein. Proteins include chicken, tofu, and black-eyed-pea-and-mushroom fritters. Among the corner's announced tenants, it will be the only one that isn't burgers, chicken or coffee, and the first to put a mix-and-match menu behind a pickup window.
The Fairgrounds Keeps the Evening
Across Castleberry Road, the Cumming Fairgrounds at 235 Castleberry Road keeps the hours it always has. The Cumming Country Fair & Festival is scheduled for October 8 through 18. Forsyth County News reported families enjoying rides and fair food on opening night, October 8.
This first weekend comes with a caveat. On October 9, Forsyth County News reported that the fair was among the local institutions that had announced plans ahead of Hurricane Isaias. The specific day-by-day changes weren't public when this was written, so the fair's own site is the place to confirm a given night.
When the fair packs up, Nights of Lights takes over the same grounds from November 20 through December 27. With both halves of the corner open, a weekday looks like this:
- 6:00 a.m. Chick-fil-A Bethelview & Castleberry opens, Monday through Saturday.
- 6:30 a.m. Jeff's Bagel Run opens, every day.
- 2:00 p.m. Jeff's Bagel Run closes.
- 5:00 p.m. Nights of Lights opens at the fairgrounds, starting November 20.
- 9:00 p.m. Nights of Lights closes Sunday through Thursday.
- 10:00 p.m. Nights of Lights closes Friday and Saturday, the same hour Chick-fil-A closes.
The afternoon gap between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. is the slot Maepole's pitch is aimed at, with "workday lunches" and "post-workout meals." Once it opens, the corner will cover nearly every daylight hour.
The Greenway End of Bethelview
Part of the post-workout crowd Maepole is counting on already parks a short drive away. The Big Creek Greenway's Bethelview Trailhead is at 5120 Bethelview Road. It is one of five county-listed access points on a trail that runs nearly 16 miles from south Forsyth to Sawnee Mountain Preserve.
North of the trailhead, the greenway is currently closed. Forsyth County's project FAQ says the segment from the Bethelview Trailhead at mile marker 8.5 to south of Kelly Mill Road at mile marker 10.3 is shut because its wooden boardwalk sections need replacement and are not safe to use. A portion of the Fowler Park Trailhead boardwalk is also disconnected, though the trail south toward the Union Hill Road Trailhead is still reachable from there. The county lists the Fowler Park Trailhead as temporarily not ADA accessible.
The sequence matters for anyone who starts at Bethelview. The county's improvements page says the goal is to finish and reopen the Fowler Park connection and the closed Phase 4 segment before work begins on Phase 3, the stretch between Fowler Park and the Bethelview Trailhead. The county expects the full project to take about two years, weather permitting, with sections closing and reopening along the way. Crowder Construction Company is the contractor and Foresite Group is the lead designer. The same page says the Bethelview Trailhead is meant to stay open during the renovation with minimal disruption.
What Still Has No Date
Most of the corner is still a schedule rather than a set of open doors. Here is where each piece stands as of October 9:
- Chick-fil-A Bethelview & Castleberry: announced to open October 1 at 6 a.m.
- Jeff's Bagel Run: opened October 2 at 5610 Bethelview Road.
- Maepole: under construction, listed by the company as "late 2026," with no exact day set.
- 7 Brew Coffee: on the tenant roster. An August forecast of September has passed, and no confirmed opening date has been published since.
- Shake Shack: permit filed, with no opening date or construction schedule announced.
- Fifth Third Bank: on the tenant roster, with no published opening date.
- Traffic signal: On January 22, 2026, Forsyth County commissioners approved a request to GDOT for a signal on SR 141/Bethelview Road at the Kroger driveway. The minutes record the request, not a construction date.
According to its project page, Abernathy still lists two Southard Exchange parcels as available, so the final mix of the eight outparcels isn't fully set.
When a corner like Bethelview and Castleberry changes, so does the pattern of a homeowner's ordinary week in west Forsyth, and the team at Home Luxury Real Estate watches those changes as closely as the market numbers.
